Please have your government declare Curtis Island a National Park.
 
 
Please do not let this natural wonderland, that acts as the lungs of Gladstone, be destroyed.
 
It does not make sense when you consider the following:
 
 
- Alternate and safer areas are available (e.g. Port Alma)
 
- LNG tankers are a threat to Gladstone harbour and the citizens of Gladstone
 
- “The energy content of a single LNG tanker (One hundred twenty-five thousand cubic meters) is equivalent to seven-tenths of a megaton of TNT, or about fifty-five Hiroshima bombs”*
 
- “Curtis Island is the lungs of Gladstone” Professor Thomas Faunce BA LLB (Hons) BMed PhD
 
- Curtis Island is home to many critically endangered, endangered and vulnerable species
 
- Many experts will attest that Curtis Island is unique in character and ecologically significant
 
- What is the sense in having a Marine Park Green Zone (National Park Marine Zone) that adjoins heavy industrial land?
 
- A large proportion of Curtis Island is already declared National Parks, proving protection of the Island is warranted
 
- Topography of the area of the Island to be used will not be particularly user friendly
 
- The current 22,000 hectare SDA in Gladstone is under-utilised
 
- The government cannot guarantee the safety of LNG plants
 
- Social conscience dictates that Curtis Island should be preserved for future generations
 
 
To allow industry to develop on Curtis Island, I believe, is to jeopardize one of Central Queensland’s best assets. 
 
 
Please help us do the right thing, declare Curtis Island a National Park and locate heavy industry in the most suitable, common sense areas (such as Port Alma).
